Biography
Early Life
Bill Montgomery was born March 2, 1967 in Lynwood, California. He was raised in a single-parent household, where his mother often had to turn to public assistance to support Bill and his younger brother and sister. Like most parents, Bill's mother wanted her children to experience an easier life than she had. Early on, she instilled in them a sense of hard work and perseverance, lessons Bill certainly took to heart.
Bill studied hard, graduating near the top of his class and becoming the first graduate from his Paramount high school to go to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.
In his years at West Point, Bill really came in to his own, learning important life lessons about temperament and leadership and acquiring skills which he applies, to this day, in both his personal and professional life.
Military Career
William Montgomery graduated from West Point in 1989 and began his commission as a Second Lieutenant at Fort Hood, Texas. He was assigned as a Tank Platoon leader, where he led his platoon as part of the 1st Cavalry Division. During Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Bill spearheaded missions to protect the operations of our troops from Iraqi forces who were determined to destroy our military.
Bill was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service, for his contribution in the liberation of Kuwait, the defeat of Saddam Hussein and the safe return of the 15 soldiers he led. Bill was later promoted to the rank of Captain, becoming one of only nine Captains to be asked to command an Armored Cavalry Troop, which is one of the most prestigious assignments an armor officer can hold as a Captain in the U.S. Army.
After his active duty service, Bill remained active in the Individual Ready Reserve for another nine years, rising to the rank of Major.
After the Military, A Tough Prosecutor
After leaving the Military, Bill attended ASU Law School, where he earned his J.D., graduating Magna Cum Laude and receiving the prestigious Order of the Coif from the College of Law in 2001.
He immediately went to work for the Maricopa County Attorney's office, where, after a brief internship and passing the Bar Exam, Bill became a prosecutor. In this position, he quickly gained a reputation for being an aggressive, fair and tireless advocate for victims' rights. Time and again, Bill demonstrated he was unafraid to go to trial to vindicate a victim's rights and protect the community. He was known for garnering tough sentences and ensuring justice was done in case after case. After several years of prosecuting felony drunk drivers, serious repeat felons and gang members, Bill later moved to the Auto Theft Bureau, where he supervised prosecutions for auto thefts in Maricopa County. Under Bill's leadership, the FBI has recorded a 35% drop in auto thefts for 2009.
