Early LifeBorn March 2, 1967 in Lynwood, California, Bill Montgomery grew up with his younger sister and brother in a single parent household where public assistance was often the only source of support. Never wanting her son to experience the financial life she struggled with, Bill’s mom taught him early on how to work for what he wanted and how to persevere through the struggles life would throw his way. His Mother’s teachings paid off. Not only did Bill graduate near the top of his high school class, but he was the first from his high school to be accepted to West Point.
Military Career
Formally known as William Montgomery, Bill graduated West Point in 1989 and began his commission as a Second Lieutenant at Fort Hood, Texas. He was assigned as a Tank Platoon leader where he led his platoon as part of the 1st Cavalry Division on missions that would protect the operations of our troops from Iraqi forces who were determined to destroy our military during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Bill later received a Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service for his contribution in the defeat of Saddam Hussein, the liberation of Kuwait and the safe return of the 15 soldiers he led. Bill was later promoted to the rank of Captain, and was one of only 9 Captains to be asked to command an Armored Cavalry Troop, one of the most prestigious assignments an armor officer could hold as Captain in the U.S. Army. Subsequent to active duty, Bill remained active in the Individual Ready Reserve another 9 years, achieving the rank of Major.

Tough Prosecutor
After leaving the Military, Bill attended Law School at ASU where he acquired his JD. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and earned the Order of the Coif from the College of Law in 2001. He immediately went to work for the Maricopa County Attorney’s office where he interned for a brief period, and after passing the Bar exam, became a prosecutor for the County Attorney’s Office. He gained a reputation for being aggressive, yet fair, and was unafraid to go to trial to vindicate a victim’s rights and protect the community. He was known for achieving tough sentences and ensuring that Justice was done in each case. After several years of prosecuting felony drunk drivers, serious repeat felons and gang members, Bill moved to the Auto Theft Bureau where he currently supervises the prosecutions for Auto Thefts in Maricopa County. Since his arrival, the FBI has recorded a near 40% drop in auto thefts for the first six months of 2009, when compared to the same time period in 2008.

Passion for Protecting Arizonans
Bill’s passion for protecting Arizonans and advocating victim’s rights can be demonstrated with his continued involvement with organizations such as Arizona Voice for Crime Victims and his contributions to written legislation designed to protect victims of crime and reform Child Protective Services.
